Inviting Your Parents and Grandparents to Canada

Super-Visa-Application

Super Visa

Have you been planning to visit family over in Canada? Are you unaware of what a super visa is? Are you thinking about applying for a super visa? If you have answered yes to any of these questions don’t worry as many other people just like you encounter the same situation.

What is a super visa

A super visasuper visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren who are either a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen in Canada for a maximal length of 2 years at a time.

Am I eligible for a super visa

To be eligible to obtain a super visasuper visa, you must:

  • Be the grandparent or parent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that:
    • Is at least $100,000 for a minimum coverage; and
    • Is valid for at least one year from the date of entry
  • Have proof that the medical insurance has been paid (quotes aren’t acceptable)
  • Have a letter signed from the child or grandchild who invites you to Canada which includes:
    • A promise of financial support for the duration of the visit
    • The list and number of of people in the household of the person; and
    • A copy of the person’s Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document

Additional requirements that you must meet are:

  • You must be allowed to enter Canada
  • You must meet other conditions; and
  • You must take an immigration medical exam

The grandchild or child that invites you needs to prove their household meets the minimum necessary income. Some examples of what they can use as a proof of funds include:

  • Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
  • Pay stubs
  • Bank statements
  • Employment letter including salary and date of hiring; and
  • Pay stubs

The government of Canada considers several things before it is decided that you can enter into Canada. One important consideration is that you will leave by choice at the end of your visit. Some other things that the government of Canada will look st for consideration includes:

· Your ties to your home country

· The purpose of your visit

· Your family and finances; and

· The overall economic and political stability of our household

How to apply for a super visa

You can apply either online or on paper to receive a super visa. If you don’t need a visitor visavisitor visa to enter Canada, you are still able to use your super visa to stay in Canada a maximum length of 2 years.

If the government of Canada approves the application, they will give you a letter which you will be required to give to the border services officer once you enter into Canada. If you travel by air, you will need to apply for an eTA on the side to allow you to travel to and enter into Canada. The eTA will then be electronically linked to your passport which you will need to travel to Canada. The officer at the border may approve a visit, of up to 2 years, to Canada.

What steps do I need to take after I apply

Most applications take around a few weeks to be processed. The processing times depends on the visa office to which you sent your application to.

If you require a visa to travel into Canada, you will be required to have a valid travel document, such as a valid passport, titre de voyage or Certificate of Identity.

How is my application processed

Once you have sent your application, it will be reviewed at the visa office to make sure that it has been correctly completed as well as it contains all the required documents. A visa officer will decide if an interview with you will be necessary. If it is decided that an interview is required, you will be notified of the time and place.

If for some reason you application is refused, your passport and other documents will be sent back to you with an explanation of the refusal. However, if you application has been approved, your documents and passport will be sent back to you along with your visa.

**Please note that a valid temporary resident visa temporary resident visa and a valid travel document does not guarantee that you will be automatically granted access into Canada. There is a possibility that you will not be granted access to enter Canada if you arrive in Canada and a Canadian official finds that you are no longer admissible due to:

  • Changes in your circumstances
  • New information about you that came into light**
