Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

What is a super visa?

A super visa is a multi-entry visa available to parents and grandparents exclusively that allows them to visa children and grandchildren for up to 2 years at a time. It provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years.

Who qualifies for a super visa:

To be eligible for a super visa you must:

  • Be able to enter Canada
  • Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Have a signed letter of invitation to Canada from your child or grandchild that includes
  • A promise of financial support for the entire length of stay
  • The number of people in the house along with their names
  • A copy of the invitee’s Canadian Citizenship or permanent resident document
  • have proof from a Canadian insurance company for medical coverage that is valid for at least 1 year, be at least $100,00 coverage and proof of payment receipt

Documents needed

  • signed letter of invitation from child or grandchild
  • proof that the inviter’s household income meets the minimum necessary income
  • proof of medical insurance payment
  • document confirming you had an immigration medical exam

How to Apply:

You must apply while outside of Canada for a super visa. You can do so either online or by paper application. As with most other immigration applications, it is faster and more cost effective to do so online.

Processing Times:

Generally the processing time for a Super Visa is 8 weeks from the time the completed application is submitted. Processing times also vary by visa office.

Financial requirements

The child or grandchild who invites you must prove that their household meets the minimum necessary incomeminimum necessary income standard. Examples of documents that can be used as proof:

  • Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the most recent tax year
  • pay stubs
  • Employment Insurance stubs
  • bank statements
  • employment letter including salary and date of hiring
  • see low income cut off (LICO) below

Important note

The super visa is a temporary option. Immigration Canada officers will need to make sure that your intentions are only to be in Canada for the time period approved.
