The Super Visa is a family stream which allows both Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents to invite their parents or grandparents. The Super Visa allows an applicant to stay in the country for a maximum of 2 years without having to renew their visa. At present, most visitors to Canada may visit for a period up to six months when they first enter Canada. Visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension, and pay a new fee.
With the parent and grandparent super visa, eligible parents and grandparents can visit family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their status.
The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years. The most important difference is that the Super Visa allows an individual to stay for up to two years at a time in Canada, while the visitor visa allows applicants to remain only for 6 months.
When applying for super visa the length of time is granted based on the validity of your passport. For example, if you passport is valid for 5 years then the super visa will be granted for 5 years only, however every two years the applicant has to exit the country and then re-enter. Similarly with the visitor visa if your passport is valid for 5 years, you will be granted a 5 year visa, however every 6 months you would need to exit the country.
Please note that the immigration officer can grant a lesser time frame based on your circumstances. Therefore, it is not always guaranteed that you will get the maximum.
