There have been changes to the live in caregiver program. Caregivers now have the option of living outside of the employer’s house. Caregivers now have the option to apply to two new pathways for permanent residence. This will reduce workplace vulnerability and provide better opportunities for the caregivers.
In order to use the live out program the worker would have to apply for a regular work permit rather than their LCP work permit. They can choose to go through LCP through either the caring for children pathway or caring for people with high medical needs pathway.
In order to be eligible under the Caring for Children Pathway the worker must have minimum of two years of Canadian work experience as a home childcare provider along with a work permit. Furthermore, must have had a one year competed Canadian post secondary credential or equivalent foreign credential and an intermediate level in the language.
Under the caring of people with high medical needs pathway the caregiver must have minimum of two years of Canadian work experience as either a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, nurse aide, Orderly, patient service associate, home support worker or other similar occupation with a work permit. Furthermore, must have completed one year Canadian post secondary credential or equivalent foreign credential along with an intermediate level of language proficiency.
Furthermore, it is important that the worker not be inadmissible. A person inadmissible for any reason should not apply through the caring for children pathway.
Have completed 24 months of authorized full time employment or
3900 hours of authorized full time employment in minimum of 22 months
And the work experience requirement was completed with the 4 years of arrival in Canada.
Live in caregiver applying for permanent residence may request parallel processing for some or all of their family members residing in or outside of Canada. The applicant must include all family members on the PR application, however family members who are not listed on the application cannot be sponsored by the caregiver even on a later date.
A live in caregiver’s status of application can be affected by a criminal record or if he or she provided wrong information about education, training or experience to the visa officer when he/she first applied.
The application package for the caregiver to apply for PR can be obtained from the CIC website. The package includes the guide on how to fill the application and where to file it. The application is to be mailed to the case processing centre in Vegreville, Alberta. There is an applicable fee that is needed to be paid either online or at a financial institution in Canada.
