There are few requirements for a co-signer:

  • The co-signer has to meet the eligibility requirements as you. The co-signer cannot be ineligible for the purpose of co-signing
  • The co-signer has to agree to co-sign the undertaking. If the co-signer is not agreeing to take on the undertaking then you cannot have a co-signer.
  • The co-signer has to agree to take the responsibilities for basic needs of that person to whom you are sponsoring for the period of the undertaking.

If you do not fulfil the basic needs of the person and did not comply with the undertaking then the co-signer is equally liable for not performing the undertaking.

If your co-signer is common- law partner then you have to submit the statutory declaration of common law union with your application.

When you submit your parents or grandparents sponsorship application, you must include your Notice of Assessment from Revenue Canada Agency which shows your income record. Both you and your cosigner will need to provide this. The immigration officer will review your documents to find out whether you and your cosigner meet the minimum requirement of income. Should you meet the requirements, then the application will continue to be processed.
