A Quarter of Canadian Workers Are Immigrants

New Data Indicates that Nearly a Quarter of Canadian Workers are Immigrants

Canada has welcomed immigrants to support the economy, society and culture of Canada for many decades and possibly centuries. As a result, Immigrants have made significant gains in Canada’s workforce. Specifically, over the last ten years, approximately more than 50 per cent of immigrants have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Based on released statistics on November 29 of 2017, the data indicates that immigrants account for approximately 23.8 per cent of Canadian workers in the year of 2016. Therefore, in this article, I will explain the new statistics and how this affects the Canadian economy.

New Data Indicating Nearly a Quarter of Canadian Workers are Immigrants

As previously mentioned, recent statistics that were released on November 29, 2017, show that approximately 23.8 per cent of Canadian workers consisted of immigrants. Compared to 21.1 per cent of Canadian workers being immigrants in 2006, these new numbers show that there is almost a quarter of Canadian workers that are immigrants. During this period, the government of Canada decided to introduce significant changes to the immigration system in order to address labour shortages. This resulted in the implementation of the Express Entry system in 2015.

The definition that Statistics Canada uses to define an immigrant is a person who is and who has ever been a landed immigrant in Canada or a permanent resident of Canada.

Specifically, when examining the work force in Canada and the regions of Canada that are highly infiltrated by immigrants, the results are extremely impressive. For instance, in 2016, nearly 50 per cent of Canadian workers were immigrants in the Toronto, Ontario metropolitan region. Similarly, in Vancouver, British Columbia, nearly 43.2 per cent of Canadian workers were immigrants and in Calgary, Alberta, nearly 32.5 per cent of Canadian workers were immigrants. These numbers are quite outstanding and clearly indicate how vital immigrants are to the Canadian work force.

How Express Entry Helps Immigrants to Work in Canada

It is important to recognize why the Express Entry system was implemented in the first place. It was introduced to help offset the expected decrease in the pool of available labour in Canada due to Canada’s aging population. Additionally, the Express Entry system has three economic categories: the Federal Skilled Workers Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program and the Canadian Experience Class. There is also the Provincial Nominee Program that is another option that collaborates with the Express Entry system as well. The intention of the Provincial Nominee Program is to address the labour market needs of specific provinces and territories.

The Express Entry program also aids skilled foreign nationals from a different variety of fields to access the program and apply for permanent residency in Canada based on specific qualifications. The specific qualifications include their skilled work experience; their education; their language abilities; their skills; and many other important details of the person. These qualifications essentially assist the Canadian government to assess the individual for permanent residency in Canada. The foreign national may apply under the Express Entry system so long as they are eligible to apply.

It is important to note that the Express Entry system is not intended to exclude employment from any potential Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Instead, the system is intended to compliment Canada’s workforce with skilled foreign nationals and allow them to have the chance to benefit the country economically. As proven above, skilled foreign nationals evidently do benefit the country economically.

How to Apply for Express Entry

The Express Entry system works in two steps. The first step is the profile creation. The second step is the invitation to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Before going through the steps it is important that you have collected all of the appropriate information and documentation in order to accurately create your profile and show your skills and experience. Important information and documentation that you should have include:

  • Language Test Results (IELTS, CELPIP and/or TEF)
  • National Occupational Classification (NOC) code with your position title
  • Educational Credential Assessment
  • Passport or Travel Document
  • Offer of employment from a Canadian employer (if obtained)
  • Copy of a Provincial Nomination (if applicable)

Once you have collected all of this important information and documentation, you can proceed to create your MYCIC account and provide Canadian immigration with these details. By creating this account, you will have access to your account and the status of your application at any time. Furthermore, after you have successfully registered yourself into the Express Entry system, you will be placed in a pool of eligible candidates under the economic immigration programs. Once in the pool, you will be ranked and assessed against the other candidates based on your qualifications and other significant factors. Candidates are ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points that are acquired. If you happen to be one of the highest ranked candidates in the pool, then Canadian immigration will choose to invite you to apply for permanent residency in Canada.
