The United States (U.S.) attempts to promote family unity within the country, and provides various options and programs that may help you bring your loved to the U.S.
There are two categories that have been established by U.S. immigration services that allow you to sponsor your loved ones:
o Immediate relative, This includes:
- Spouse of a citizen
- Dependent and unmarried children under 21
- Orphan adopted abroad or to be adopted
- Parents of a U.S. citizen
o Under family preference, this category may allow you to sponsor more distant family members like:
- Married children and their minor children
- Siblings and their spouse
- Children of the dependent children
Immediate relatives are usually given a special status, as they may be considered close relatives of the sponsor. The Family Preference has limits to the number or people that may be sponsored, and there is usually a waiting period to get your visa number. Unlike immediate relatives they have to wait for a priority date. The U.S. citizen can file the petition to sponsor both from inside or outside of the U.S.
The application process may be long, and require a great deal of documentation. You have to be both detailed and accurate in your application forms.
