What is a Travel Document?
If you are a permanent resident returning to Canada, you will need to show a valid permanent resident card or travel document before boarding an airplane, train, or any other means of transportation. Not everyone will need to show their travel documents.
Who Needs Them?
-
Convention refugees
-
Protected persons
-
Stateless person
-
Permanent residents for less than 3 years who can’t get a national passport for valid reasons
Two Types of Travel Documents
There are two types of travel documents a refugee travel document and a certificate of identity. In order to apply, you must fill up the required application form. Proof of your immigration status in Canada must be attached to the application. This can be proven by your permanent resident card, your temporary resident permit, or the notice of decision from the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). You must provide documents that support your identity, along with two identical passport photos. If you’ve applied for a Canadian citizenship and have been refused, you will need to provide a copy of the refusal letter. And lastly, you will need any valid Canadian travel document issued in your name in the last five years.
Along with that, you will need a guarantor to sign your application. They must sign the required parts of your application, the back of one of your passports, and the front and back of all your supporting identity documents. The guarantor is anyone who is a family member or individual living at your address.
Must Include Reference Letters
-
Not be a family member
-
Have known you for at least two years
-
Be 18 years of age or order
It is important to note that you cannot use your guarantor as a reference. Once you’ve completed and attached all necessary documents, it should take 20 business days for the travel document application to process and you’ll be all set to go.
