What is an Off Campus Work Permit
The off-campus work permit is an exclusive program in Canada which is designed for students studying in Canada from abroad. The off-campus work permit will allow the abroad student to work off the campus while studying in Canada.
Check your Eligibility to Work Off Campus
You can work off campus without a work permit if you meet all of the below mentioned requirements:
- you’re a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI)
- you’re enrolled in
- a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program or
- a secondary-level vocational training program (Quebec only)
- your study program
- is at least 6 months long
- the study program in which you are enrolled leads to a degree, diploma or certificate
- your study permit says you can work off campus
- you’ve started studying
- you have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Can I Work Off Campus if I am a Part Time Student
If you are a part time student and want to work off campus then you need to meet the following points;
- you must meet all of the requirements above
- you’re only studying part-time, instead of full-time, because:
- you’re in the last semester of your study program and you don’t need a full course load to complete your program and
- you were a full-time student in your program in Canada, up until your last semester
When you Cannot Work off Campus
Even if you meet the above detailed eligibility criteria and falls under any of the below pointers then also you will be ineligible to work off campus.

You are not studying

You are changing/ switching the school
How Many Hours Can I Work Off Campus
If you want to work during regular school terms/semesters, you can work up to 20 hours per week. However, if you are willing to work during scheduled breaks in the school year then you can work full-time if you’re on a scheduled break, such as winter and summer holidays, or a fall or spring reading week. You’re free to work overtime or work for two part-time jobs simultaneously that add up to a higher than usual number of hours. You must be a full-time student both before and after the break to work full-time. You need to keep into account that you can’t work during a break that comes before you start your very first school semester. If in case your program doesn’t have scheduled breaks then in that case you can work up to 20 hours per week.
Who is ineligible to Work Off Campus?
You can’t work off campus without a work permit if any of these situations apply to you:
- you’re only taking courses required to be accepted into a full-time program
- your situation changes and you no longer meet all of the requirements to work off campus
- your study permit says you aren’t authorized to work off campus while you study
- you’re only enrolled in an English or French as a second language (ESL/FSL) program
- you’re only taking general interest courses
