How to Immigrate to Nova Scotia through PNP

Foreign nationals from all over the globe would be interested in moving to Nova Scotia as it is one of Canada’s most beautiful provinces. The province of Nova Scotia is one of Canada’s four founding provinces to be a part of the Canadian Confederation in 1867; Nova Scotia, as a result, is rich with history. Foreign nationals who are applying through the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) have five different ways to obtain permanent residency in Nova Scotia. Under this program, Nova Scotia selects skilled foreign nationals who have a connection with Nova Scotia. In this article, I will address what the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) is and the five different ways to gain permanent residency in Nova Scotia.

What is the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)

The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) is an economic immigration program that essentially helps the province of Nova Scotia to meet its labour market needs. The program also assists and prioritizes economic development within the province of Nova Scotia. Most importantly, it also assists skilled foreign nationals by offering an quicker immigration process into Canada. In other words, the program facilitates the province of Nova Scotia to nominate specific foreign nationals with skilled work experience and qualifications that match the provincially established criteria to work in Nova Scotia and obtain permanent residency. These foreign nationals will then be able to contribute to Nova Scotia’s economy.

How does the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) Work

If you receive a nomination from the province of Nova Scotia, then you may proceed to apply for permanent residency in Canada. It is essential to show an intent to reside in Nova Scotia by submitting the “Intention to Reside” document with your application. Fortunately, your spouse or common law partner, as well as any dependent children, may also apply for permanent residency in Canada, if you are successfully nominated. Please note that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ultimately make the final decision on all permanent residency applications in Canada.

The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) offers nominations in its own immigration streams that target certain groups such as Entrepreneurs, International Graduate Entrepreneurs, Skilled Workers as well as the two Nova Scotia Demand and Experience categories through Express Entry. As previously mentioned, under the NSNP, there are five different ways that you can apply for permanent residency in Nova Scotia; therefore, it is best to fully understand what all of them have to offer before applying for the one that best suits you.

Pathways under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)

There are five different pathways that you can apply for under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP). Below, I will list and describe the different streams in detail.

Entrepreneur

This pathway was developed and intended for experienced business owners and/or senior business management who desire to reside in Nova Scotia. The requirement for this pathway is that the foreign national must establish a new business or purchase an existing business and is required to participate in the daily management of the business. Once the foreign national has completed one year of operating the business, they may become nominated for permanent residency in Canada.

International Graduate Entrepreneur

This pathway was developed and intended for recent graduates from either a Nova Scotia university or college. To qualify under this pathway, the recent graduate must have already established or purchased a business in Nova Scotia and have successfully operated it for a minimum of one year. Furthermore, if the recent graduate intends to reside and settle within Nova Scotia, they may be nominated for permanent residency in Canada.

Skilled Worker

This pathway was developed and intended to assist Nova Scotia employers to recruit and obtain foreign workers as well as recent graduated international students that have skills that are specifically required in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia employer must hire foreign workers for the intended positions only if the intended position cannot be filled by a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

Nova Scotia Demand: Express Entry

This pathway was developed and intended to select highly skilled foreign nationals that desire to reside and settle in Nova Scotia permanently. In addition, the skilled foreign nationals must also have a high chance of finding employment in Nova Scotia’s labour market. For this specific pathway, the province of Nova Scotia specifically seeks for certain types of occupations to nominate the candidate. For this specific pathway, you must also be registered in the Express Entry immigration selection system.

Nova Scotia Experience: Express Entry

This pathway was developed and intended to select highly skilled foreign nationals who wish to live and settle in Nova Scotia permanently. In addition, the skilled foreign nationals must also have a minimum of one year of work experience in Nova Scotia in a highly skilled occupation in either National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level 0, A or B. For this specific pathway, you must also be registered in the Express Entry immigration selection system.
