What is the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program?

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is program that was created by government of Alberta to support Alberta’s economic growth by attracting and retaining work-ready people to the province.

The AINP offers skilled and semi-skilled workers together with their family members (spouse/common-law partner and dependent children) to apply for permanent residency once they are nominated by the government of Canada. You can apply for AINP either on your own or with an employer but this all depends on which stream you apply under. Read below which will work best for you and your family and what requirements you need to meet under the stream.

Strategic Recruitment Stream

Under the Strategic Recruitment Stream you are able to apply on your own (without an employer) under one of three category options available:

To qualify under the Compulsory and Optional Trades Category you need to be a temporary foreign worker in Canada with a valid trade certificate in a compulsory or optional trade in Alberta issued or recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).

To qualify under the Engineering Occupations Category you need to be a foreign worker in Alberta and have work experience in an eligible engineering occupation.

To qualify for Post-Graduate Worker Category you need to have Post-Graduation Work Permit and are currently working Canada. Also, you must have graduated from a post-secondary school that is recognized in Canada.

Employer Driven Stream

When applying under the Employer Driven Stream you have the option to select from three different countries with your employer. The categories include

To be eligible under the Skilled Worker Category you must have a permanent full-time job offer from an employer in the province of Alberta in one of eligible skilled occupations. The skilled occupation must fall under of the NOCs:

To be eligible under the International Graduate Category you must have graduated from post-secondary school that is recognized in Canada. Also, you must have valid Post-Graduation Work Permit with a permanent full-time job offer by an employer in Canada that falls under an eligible occupation.

To be eligible under the Semi-Skilled Worker Category you should have a permanent full-time job offer from an employer in Alberta. The job must fall under eligible semi-skilled occupation and you must be a temporary foreign worker in the province of Alberta to qualify for the nomination. Not everyone qualifies under this category, so ensure you qualify and you meet the minimum language requirements to be considered.

Self-Employed Farmer Stream

If you are a farmer and have management experience as a farmer and meet the financial resources to purchase and establish a farm in Alberta then you may be eligible under the Self-Employed Farmer stream.

Who cannot apply under Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program?

When you decide to move to the province of Alberta and like to obtain permanent residency you must understand that you will not get nomination for Alberta just to extend your work permit. So in order to get a nomination for the province of Alberta you must have valid work permit and it has to be valid throughout your application and assessment process.

Reminder to qualify your work permit must be valid throughout the application and assessment process. Luckily, individuals that fall under the Strategic Recruitment Stream Engineering Occupations Category are exempt from this requirement. During the assessment process you need to provide AINP your valid work permit or show you are on implied status whether you have a positive LMIA or if you are LMIA exempt as determined by IRCC.
