Identification requirement for crossing the Canadian border (Canadian and American citizens)

The Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) is the agency in charge of border enforcement. The CBSA has established strict rules and requirements, to maintain the safety and security of Canadians.

Presenting the correct documents to establish your identity is extremely important at the border. Not presenting the proper documents may lead to a secondary screening at the border. There are different requirements for Americans crossing the Canadian border and for the Canadians returning to Canada. Border Service Officer (BOS) may ask for the following documents if you are an American citizen:

  • Firstly, your passport, which is the most important and a document used at the border. If may become very complicated if you do not have a American passport to establish your identity.
  • If you do not have a pass port you may need proof of American citizenship (birth certificate, as certificate of citizenship).

For Canadian Citizen:

  • Passport is again a necessary document that is highly recommended to have at the border.
  • Additionally, you may be required to present proof of citizenship, and a photo identification card. A photo identification card may include a, Enhanced Driver’s license, Canadian citizenship card, PR card, NEXUS card (trusted traveler card), Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card (traveler card for commercial vehicles) Certificate of Indian Status, or a birth certification combined with a government issued photo ID.

There are application and assessments that are required to get a NEXUS or a FAST card. It is important to note that identification is a major requirement, but there are other rules that you need to follow to cross the border without any hassle.
