What is a Canadian Study Permit?

A Canadian study permit is a legal document that is issued to foreign students who wish to pursue Canadian education. The study permit allows these students to study at a designated learning institution (DIL) at the post-secondary level. A study permit must be applied for before entering  Canada but it is also important to note that the permit does not act as a visa or eTA to enter the country

What is a Designated Learning Institution (DIL)?

A designated Learning Institute is a post-secondary school that has been approved by the provincial or territorial government to allow international students to study there. All elementary and secondary schools are designated learning intuitions but only select post-secondary school are.

Do I need a Canadian Study permit?

As a foreign student there are a few factors the might exempt you from needing a study permit. You are not required to have a study permit if:

  • Your period of study is 6 months or less
  • You are a minor
  • You are a member of a foreign armed forces (military)
  • Have obtained the status of a registered Indian in Canada
  • You have been officially recognized by Global Affairs Canada as a staff member or a family member of foreign representative of Canada

Study Permit Requirements

The following requirements from the Government of Canada are to be included with your application in order to obtain a study permit:

  • Letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution
  • Valid travel document (such as a passport)
  • Proof of finances- you must be financially able to support yourself while in Canada
  • Biometrics
  • You must be able to convince the immigration officer that you will return to your home country upon completion of your studies
  • Background check/police certificate
  • Medical exam (if required)

How long are you able to stay in Canada with a study permit?

Study permits are issued for the length of your study period plus 90 days. This 90 day period is to allow you to return home or apply to extend your stay.

How much does a study permit cost?

The cost of obtaining a study permit is $150CAD

Can I work while in Canada on a study permit?

You might be able to work on campus or off campus which enrolled full-time at a DIL. If you are, it is noted on your study permit.

Can I leave Canada during my permit validity period?

As long as your visa or eTA is valid when re-entering, you are allowed to travel. Always be prepared to provide proof of your studies when re-entering the country
